Putting the BAR into Barcelona

The most representative photo for our stay in Barcelona is certainly not the most beautiful we have ever taken. It is not the quirky gingerbread houses and surrealist landscapes/buildings of Gaudi’s Parc Guell or Sagrada Familia, nor is it the stunning nighttime views of Montjuic. It is not the beautiful abundance of the markets, or the incredible drama of the Flamenco.

It is of a bottle of pink wine. In a boot. Wearing a hat. Barcelona was a city where we re-claimed the youth and street cred we may have lost in the jungles of Panama.

No more going to bed at 8 and waking up with the sun for us. No way, in Barcelona we embraced the life of red wine and tapas for breakfast. Breakfast which begins at 2pm because that is the earliest we managed to scrape ourselves off the couch by.  Here we are after a breakfast of vermouth, wine, beer and papas bravas, ready to start our day!

I will say that in a city that encourages so much late-night drinking they should really insist that dishwashing detergent and coffee creamer come in more drastically different packaging. That was a close one!

Barcelona is a city we will definitely be returning to. We liked it, as in LIKED LIKED it. Yeah- we are crushing on Barcelona and all the friends we made there pretty hard, and not just because we were reminded that we “still got it.”  We sadly left with only the knowledge that we’d be back preventing us from being too broken-hearted, and headed off for some well-deserved rest with the Krones Clan in Vienna.

I think of California as officially "home" but can usually be found a lot closer to the equatorial belt. After finishing a Masters program in 2011 I found myself trying to decide between a couple of different high-powered career options. I decided I wasn't quite ready to "grow up" and went with an entirely different plan which involved selling off everything I owned with my partner Tom and buying a one-way ticket to Colombia. Our plan was to travel "Till The Money Ran Out" and then go home to start our grown-up lives. Instead, we started our own app development company on the road and have been criss-crossing the globe, traveling, working, eating spicy food and refusing to "grow up" ever since.
